Breno Garbois is widely recognized for his mastery of Maritime Law, a field in which he has been practising for around 20 years. Throughout his career, he has acquired considerable experience in shipping litigation, representing a range of clients in highly complex disputes concerning charter parties, oil spills, ship arrest, marine accidents, bills of lading, cargo claims, and infraction notices, as well as conflicts related to commodities/international trade, shipbuilding, and the sale and purchase of vessels. His clients include shipowners, charterers and their insurers, port terminals, commodities traders, shipyards, and others.
He also works in shipping consultancy and marine regulation. Recently, Breno Garbois has consolidated his reputation in representing offshore service providers and operators in administrative and judicial proceedings against Petrobras, as well as in representing the interests of such clients in bidding processes.
Breno Garbois has been recognised as a leading shipping lawyer in Brazil by Chambers and Partners, Leaders League, Legal 500 and Who's Who Legal. He frequently speaks at various seminars, lectures, and conferences on shipping law in Brazil and overseas. Breno Garbois is also the author of several academic papers, amongst which stand out "O arresto de navios. Breve estudo comparativo sobre a atual sistemática e o novo regime do projeto de Código Comercial", published in the book “Novas Reflexões sobre o Projeto de Código Comercial, Ed. Saraiva, 2015” and "A autonomia do Direito Marítimo, o atual cenário legislativo e a necessidade de codificação própria - Breve análise do Direito Comparado" published in “Mar em Movimento, Contribuições para o VII Congresso Nacional de Direito Marítimo, Portuário e Aduaneiro”, Ed. Arraes, 2018. He is a member of the IIDM (Instituto Iberoamericano de Derecho Maritimo) and the ABDM (Associação Brasileira de Direito Marítimo), where he held the position of Vice President from 2016 to 2018. He served as the Secretary of the Comissão de Direito Marítimo e Portuário at OAB/RJ (2013 – 2015) and OAB/SP (2016 – 2018).
Breno Garbois is married and the father of two boys (and a Jack Russell). He is a huge Flamengo fan and enjoys cooking. During his free time, he travels to the mountains and loves to host friends over a glass of good wine.
